If something has differentiated photography from its beginnings in the audiovisual field, it has been able to capture images in vertical format and display the content without problem. Today we will focus our learning on landscape photography in vertical format.
Since a few years ago, the vertical format has gained video followers for the arrival of smartphones and social networks, they make vertical video win followers because it makes it more comfortable to play on a device that fits in one hand.
4 tips for landscape photography in vertical format
But let’s go back to photography and this fantastic format which we can do great works in landscape photography in vertical format.
The composition is so basic that an image can be read correctly by the person who observes it and can produce what the photographer sees in a scene. It can able to give different meanings of the image that the image format is vertical or horizontal.
Landscape photography in vertical format
Landscape photography in vertical format will allow us to give our work several meanings, that we did it horizontally, it would probably tell us something else completely different.
One of the reasons why landscape photography in vertical format gives us different results is because the eye normally tries to complete the representation of an image horizontally and more if it is a landscape. Horizontal photography has always been associated with landscape photography, often calling this format horizontal photography or landscape photography.
In a different way, vertical photography has been associated with portrait photography. The portrait in vertical format stylizes the image and the lens distortion is much smaller, which will not distort the real appearance of the portrait.
This is one of the aspects for which I encourage you to work with
Landscape photography in vertical format. Landscape photography is often a documentary modality and always seeks the most faithful representation of the state and dimensions of the landscape.
We can observe that the same landscape photographed with a wide angle lens will give us a different representation than if we photograph it horizontally or vertically. The size of the subjects and the distortion produced by this type of lens will influence the result.
1. Work with a wide angle lens
At present there are ultra wide angle lenses that hardly produce distortion and that make the true representation of the landscape to be photographed much easier. Ultra wide-angle lenses, such as the Irix 11mm and 15mm, have made distortions in the image in horizontal format barely noticeable, this makes the vertical format much more comfortable and the size-aspect ratio is more in line with reality.
Another point to keep in mind is, how can we play with the escape lines, these are accentuated much more, since the eye travels less distance in this format than in the horizontal format.
We have to know that in vertical photographs the state of composition rules does not change, we can establish them exactly the same as in horizontal photography. If you want to know more about the rules of composition check out this article.
With digital cameras we can use techniques that exceed the limits of our camera, obtaining truly amazing vertical images, for this we will use software such as Photoshop.
2. Power the foreground for greater impact
One of the main techniques that is being used a lot to give an importance to the image. To enhance the foreground of the shot, we obtain results with a close-up shot with an almost three-dimensional aspect. At the same Time makes giving us the feeling of being able to touch the elements.
This technique comes from the well-known multi-approach, it is used in macro photography that able to get the subject completely focused, however small in focal lengths with maximum aperture. In macro photography the depth of field is often too small to be able to get the insect clear or any other subject to be photographed with a macro lens, and focus stacking has been used very frequently.
The focus stacking consists of taking several photographs with different focus to then stack them in Photoshop and obtain the desired result.
3. Put the Focus Stacking technique into practice
In landscape photography vertical format, we have adopted this technique called Focus Stacking. In order to exceed the limits of our objective, require to entire plane completely in focus, from the minimum focus distance of the lens, to infinity, leaving that feeling of strength and dynamism that almost allows us to enter the landscape. The technique is exactly the same as in macro photography, we will take several tripod photographs from the minimum distance allowed by the lens which we are working, and we will be taking photographs away from the focus distance to infinity. We can also combine the focus of the first plans with the approach to the hyperfocal distance and the post-processing. It is much easier for us to do the stacking of focus.
With this technique we will give more dynamism to the image, from the foreground to the infinite.
4. Help yourself with precision accessories
As with Focus Stacking, digital photography has opened up new ways of working, such as being able to take panoramic photographs by attaching several photographs taken with a tripod in software.
This type of vertical panoramic shots can be technically improved using accessories such as the precision rail and the leveling base that will make the pixels of each vertical photo perfectly fit with each other. Thus have no problems if we have a very close-up visible in our panoramic composition.
So we can obtain through that union a vertical panoramic photograph from which to enjoy a large archive with lots of information.
After reading these simple tricks, you are sure that you are looking forward to taking pictures of vertical landscapes. If you know any more, do not hesitate to share it with us here or through social networks.
